“Souvenirs of ‘Cyrano’” to preview May opera and other works by David DiChiera

April 30 at Christ Church Cranbrook

Detroit, April 30, 2017 – Michigan Opera Theatre and Chamber Music at the Scarab Club are pleased to present a joint concert featuring the work of MOT Founder David DiChiera. “Souvenirs of ‘Cyrano’” will celebrate the musical legacy of DiChiera as he prepares for retirement in May. The event will feature selections from DiChiera’s opera “Cyrano” as well as works inspired by the story of Cyrano de Bergerac—a French poet and swordsman whose unusually large nose keeps him from finding true love. The event will take place at Christ Church Cranbrook, Sunday, April 30 at 4 p.m. and is presented in advance of MOT’s production of “Cyrano” May 13–21.

For more than 40 years, DiChiera has been a driving force for culture in Southeast Michigan and for the opera industry across the United States. Also a trained composer, holding degrees in composition and musicology from UCLA, DiChiera has been an important voice in American music. In addition to selections from “Cyrano,” the concert will feature additional DiChiera compositions including “Four Sonnets to Verses by Edna St. Vincent Millay” with soprano and MOT Studio Artist Angela Theis, “Letter to Sarah”—a setting of the last letter home from a Civil War soldier—with baritone John Daugherty, and “Souvenir d’Arras” with violinist Velda Kelly, cellist Nadine Deleury, and pianist Mary Siciliano. Also to be heard are a setting of Walter Damrosch’s “Letter to Roxane” (1913), as well as two newer works: a cello solo work written for Deleury by French composer Pierre Thilloy, and a work for piano trio by Nicholas Edelmann, a Wayne State University composition student and winner of a recent contest adjudicated by DiChiera.

“Cyrano” made its world premiere at the Detroit Opera House Oct. 13, 2007.
