Sunday School Curriculum
Children 3 years through 3rd grade are taught using Godly PlayTM, this curriculum uses the Montessori method to teach the stories of the Bible through storytelling, ritual, and hands-on activities. The classroom is set up as a sacred space and roughly emulates what happens in the big church. The key to this approach is a worship context for telling and working with Biblical stories, instead of a school environment. Through storytelling using powerful language, through our wondering, through the community of players gathered together, we hear the deepest invitation of all: an invitation to come play with God. This approach was developed and classroom tested for over 25 years by Dr. Jerome Berryman, teacher, author and Episcopal priest. It is currently being used in churches of many denominations throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Godly Play offers a creative, child-honoring way of entering into and experiencing the biblical story. Children in 4th-5th grade explore the Bible using the Connect curriculum. Connect takes tweens on a journey through the Old Testament and into the New Testament, exploring the connections between several stories each week. Children are given their very own Connect NRSV Bible to take home and bring each week to class. This Bible is one that we hope your child will highlight, write in, take to Sunday School, dog-ear the corners of their favorite passages and take to camp. In other words, we hope that your child grows with this Bible during their fomative tween and teen years.
We have a wonderful collection of very talented Sunday school teachers. Teachers are volunteers from our parish that feel called to this ministry. Teachers teach in teams of two and are background checked. All teachers complete the course “Safeguarding God’s Children” provided by our Diocese. Christian Education Registration form 2015-2016
Twice yearly, the children and youth present a Liturgical Drama about a story of the Bible to the congregation during a worship service. I love Liturgical Dramas because of the potential they hold for our children and youth. Through Liturgical Drama’s, children and youth get a chance to exercise their ministry muscle by leading us in worship with potential to encounter a truly transformational experience. In the end, the children walk away from this experience intimately knowing a Bible story, which becomes THEIR story. When watching the drama we are all carried directly to heaven with the children’s story and singing.
