Stars Without a Spotlight

By Tiffany Morris-Street

Shrove Tuesday is one of my favorite nights of the year. We come together as a faith community to enjoy elaborate lip sync routines, talented musicians, and sugary treats before the meditative solemnity of Lent. An event that lasts mere hours takes weeks to plan and hard work from a myriad of volunteers. We eat our pancakes and applaud those onstage, but what about those “backstage”? 2 Corinthians, Chapter 9, Verse 7 says: “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not regretfully or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” The many volunteers who shopped, cooked, cleaned, decorated, performed, and delivered our abundance of extra food to Sanctum House did so from their hearts. There is no recognition or accolades expected and yet, I would like to put them center stage, here and now. As we enter this season of self-reflection on the road to renewal through Christ Jesus, let us remember to be “cheerful givers” and give thanks to those who stay just out of the spotlight so that others may shine. Thank you to all the music department volunteers who made Shrove Tuesday a success!
