I Can’t Wait!

By: Frances Hammond

When I signed up for the first year of EfM here at Christ Church Cranbrook, it was because I wanted to address my Old Testament knowledge deficit. I thought that the opportunity to read through the whole of the Old Testament (OT) and discuss it with others who were serious about learning would be worthwhile – It was! During that first year, I began to engage with scripture to explore my faith and discern the word of God. There was no ‘right’ interpretation, more questions than answers. Wrestling with the texts with others and reflecting on context, perspectives and the power structures of the times changed my relationship with scripture. I now understand that the most meaning comes when we are prepared to wrestle with the texts.

Last year, our EfM group reformed. I moved on to Year 2, where the focus is the New Testament. The group added new Year 1 (OT) participants. Together, we built a practice of Theological Reflection. Most wonderfully, we formed a deeply meaningful spiritual community. Meeting weekly, we began with prayer and check in, moving through our takeaways from our readings, then to Theological Reflection (TR). In the latter we covered a wide range of topics, from popular culture to scripture to art to current local challenges. The TR frameworks allowed us to pay attention to God and our role in manifesting God’s love in new, exciting and relevant ways. The TR process is an invaluable asset on my spiritual journey. Our group members took care of each other through prayer, good snacks and fellowship, and in joyous celebrations and recognition of each other.

I can’t wait to begin my third year of EfM and for the group to reform again. Please consider joining us! We would love to grow with you! Year 1 readings focus is the Old Testament, Year 2 is the New Testament and the focus of Year 3 readings is Church History – about which I know only a smattering. Mostly though I look forward to building spiritual community with others. Our weekly meetings begin in mid-September and run through mid-June 2025. We’d love to have you join us!

EfM is a 4-year Christian Formation program founded and administered through the School of Theology of the University of the South at Sewanee. Through study, prayer, worship, and reflection, EfM seminar groups journey together through scripture, church history, and theology.  This year, we have two seminar groups at CCC beginning Sept 23.  Both will meet on Monday evenings at CCC.
