Praying the Examen – God in the Everyday
Tuesday Nights in Advent | Nov 29 – Dec 20 | 7 PM – 7:30 PM | St. Paul’s Chapel
Each Tuesday night in Advent we will gather to pray “The Examen” as we look for the ways Christ is being born into our daily life. The Examen is a short (20 minutes or so) prayer of reflection and commitment developed by St. Ignatius Loyola more than 600 years ago to help Christians recognize God’s grace and access the Power of the Holy Spirit to change their lives. We will supply everything you need and will walk you through it step-by-step.
What is the Examen?
The prayer was developed to be a short, daily reflection. The Examen asks open-ended questions and involves periods of silence for self-reflection. Each night we will pray the prayers together, and then close with the Lord’s Prayer after which we will open it up for an optional time of group sharing. What did the prayers help us to see? What did we notice? How were we surprised? What are we being invited to do or be?
For those who want to try it on their own, we will be using the booklet, “Reimagining the Examen” by Mark Thibodeaux available on Amazon.
