In 1736, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi wrote what would become one of the most famous settings of the hymn Stabat mater dolorosa, which describes the turmoil and hopeful faith of Mary, Mother of Jesus as she watches the crucifixion. It has been recorded by the greatest classical singers (Cecilia Bartoli, Barbara Bonney, Andreas Scholl, to name a few) and will serve not only as a prelude to Choral Evensong but as a preparation for the upcoming Holy Week. We welcome Maggie Burk and Debra Lonergan back to Christ Church and look forward to hearing Antona Yost’s debut performance at Christ Church, all under the direction of Joe Balistreri, Musician in Residence.
Music for Choral Evensong will include three compositions by English Renaissance composer, William Byrd: Civitas Sancti Tui, The Second Evening Service, and his choral responses to the liturgy.
