As part of our celebration of the 92nd anniversary of the founding of Christ Church Cranbrook, Director of Music and Organist Christopher Wells will perform a brief organ recital to be broadcast Founders’ Day. Music will include:
- Suite Breve by contemporary American composer and organist Craig Phillips (as heard on Christopher’s recording of Phillips’ organ music, also available from Christopher himself!).
The short pieces in this suite, commissioned for the American Guild of Organists Boston Regional Convention in 2009, each feature a different group of stops and sounds on the organ — from weighty foundations and dancing flutes to reeds and luscious strings, and finally full organ. It allows the organist to showcase our instrument — now heard in the church with different acoustics since the pandemic, (sadly) without an in-person audience but also with pew cushions and kneelers removed.
- Serenade by British composer, conductor, and teacher Derek Bourgeois
Bourgeois, known especially for his music for brass and wind bands, wrote this Serenade for his own wedding to be played as the guests departed the church. The jaunty piece keeps both player and listeners on their toes as it seamlessly moves in mixed meters for a joyous conclusion to a ceremony and recital.
