Our Musician-in-Residence Joe Balistreri is launching a lecture series called “Music and Meaning”. We will survey the millennia-old origins of western sacred music. We will see at how musical thought has interacted richly with philosophical, scientific, and theological thought through the centuries. We will look at the acoustical mechanics of music, which early Christians saw as proof of divinity. We will hear how music helps us thrive through the most challenging moments of life.
The first lecture, “Lux Aeterna: Songs that Defy Death” will be an exploration of Christian expressions of grief and hope through musical language. Historical developments and cultural lenses invite participants to explore their own experiences of grief and hope and identify where music has facilitated fuller entry into these mysteries. The Duruflé Requiem will serve as a primary vehicle of exploration. Join us for what will be an insightful presentation.
