One of the enduring strains of civic discourse in America involves the notion that constitutional rights are not of human origin, but that they come directly from God, resting on divine authority. As powerful as this idea may be, it has often been the source of intense conflict and political struggle, leading many people of faith to question whether religious traditions should continue to play a role in shaping our public understandings of fundamental rights. In a three-part forum, taught by Dr. Troy Dostert, we will explore some of the ways that religious arguments have shaped past debates over individual rights, in order to determine what contemporary lessons we might draw from these historical episodes. Dr. Dostert holds a Ph.D. in Political Theory from Duke University and teaches History at Cranbrook’s Upper School.
