SUMMARY:Lighthouse Emergency Shelter Week
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, we come alongside Lighthouse to serve dozens of families in the shelter\, most with children around 10 years old\, providing meals\, comfort\, and care. This week gives residents care and kindness in an otherwise difficult time. Through our item of the month collection we are requesting new and gently used Halloween costumes for the children in the shelter to be given out at an ice cream party on Oct. 17th. \nThis year\, to feed the families housed in the emergency shelter\, we will need 880 items and $5\,000 ($2.97 a meal) to feed breakfast\, lunch\, and dinner to 80 people for the week of Oct.12 – 18th! \nHere are ways you can get involved: \n\nDonate – food or funds to feed those in the shelter for the week.\nVolunteer – to make food kits\, cook\, package\, and deliver meals.\nVolunteer – at the costume party on Oct. 17\, 5-8 P.M.

When we read passages that speak about exile and destruction\, rape and murder\, and an angry God who lashes out\, we are naturally terrorized. What do we do with such Sacred texts? How can they be taken as “good news? How can our Scriptures become resources for resilience rather than triggers for retraumatization? Drawing from recent research in Biblical studies and trauma theory\, we will explore strategies for interpretation that create connection and healing even while reading such difficult texts.

SUMMARY:New Resilience and Safety Plan Presentation and Training
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Christopher Furlong\, Director of Security at Cranbrook Educational Community (CEC)\, we are implementing an approach to campus safety that mirrors the system already in place at CEC. This collaboration allows both of our organizations to benefit from the synergy of shared best practices and coordination between our communities. Specifically\, we will share a Standard Response Protocol system\, which will establish common terminology and emergency response plans. Additionally\, we will be implementing regular ALICE training (Alert\, Lockdown\, Inform\, Counter\, and Evacuate)\, providing our leaders with the most effective\, research-based response to active shooter events. \nOn Saturday\, October 18\, from 9:00 – 11:00 AM\, Mr. Furlong is coming to Christ Church Cranbrook to present an overview of and training on our integrated resilience plan. He will be joined by Captain Tom VanSimaeys of the Bloomfield Hills Police\, who is a certified ALICE instructor. I encourage everyone to attend\, and particularly our staff and lay leaders serving on the vestry\, committees\, and ministries. The presentation will take place in the sanctuary. Mr. Furlong’s presentation will be available online\, and additional programs and opportunities will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. \nAbout Christopher Furlong:\nChristopher Furlong\, CPP\, is the Director of Security and Safety at Cranbrook Educational Community\, a role he has held since 2022. He brings 15 years of law enforcement experience\, beginning with the Chicago Police Department and later serving a decade with the Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Department. A graduate of Michigan State University and Board-Certified Protection Professional (CPP) through ASIS International\, Christopher is guided by the belief that true safety is built through a shared culture of preparedness\, collaboration\, and community.
