Pray During Election Week

By: Pastor Manisha Dostert

We invite you to pray during the week surrounding Election Day on Tue, Nov 5.  It will ground you, give you a sense of purpose and remind you to trust in God who is always present no matter what happens to us.  Here are three ways you can pray:

  • Pray at Home.  The Book of Common Prayer offers a prayer for Elections and the Nation.  You are invited to pray these every day.
    • Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representative; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Book of Common Prayer, pp. 822-823
    • Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart, and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Book of Common Prayer, pp. 822-823
    • Or Fr. Bill’s adapted Book of Common Prayer linked in his message below.
  • Pray at Church.  Every weekday morning, the church opens at 8am for Morning Prayer.  At 8.30am, we have a Zoom Morning Prayer (click here to join).  These short half-hour worship services can be soothing to the soul and allow you to gather with others who join in the stream of prayers being lifted up to God.
  • Pray with the Nation.  The Washington National Cathedral has many livestreamed services throughout the week.  Join the country as we pray together: https://cathedral.org/worship/election/
