Small groups have always been at the heart of Christian community. From the earliest days of the Church, believers gathered “from house to house” to pray, learn, and support one another in a fragmented and often overwhelming world. Not much has changed. We still need places where we can belong, grow, and be strengthened in faith — especially when life gets tough.
At Christ Church Cranbrook, we believe God uses friends to help us grow spiritually and to carry us through the challenges of life. That’s why we’re making it easy to find a circle of people who will walk with you this Lent. Whether you’re new to the church or a long time member, single, married, empty nester, young adult, retired or still working, we have a place for you because – life is better together.
Lent invites us into a season of reflection, intention, and spiritual growth. It’s a time when many of us feel a tug to reconnect with God and with one another. A Lenten small group provides exactly that kind of space — a simple, weekly rhythm of Scripture, conversation, practice, and prayer that helps us grow into the likeness of Christ.
This Lent we’re launching a five‑week, sermon‑based small group series beginning the week of February 22. The conversations will flow directly from the Sunday sermon, so there’s nothing to teach and nothing to prepare. Each group will have a facilitator, so hosts don’t even need to lead the discussion. And you are free to invite anyone — friends from church, family, neighbors, co‑workers, or people who simply need a place to belong.
It’s simple. It’s meaningful. And it’s the perfect Lenten practice.
If you’re thinking, “This sounds great, but my life is already overflowing,” you’re not alone. Most of us juggle work, family, school, volunteering, and the endless stream of responsibilities that fill our days. The idea of adding one more thing can feel impossible.
But here’s the thing: If you feel overwhelmed by life, then a group may be exactly what you need.
We all need a place to breathe. A place to be loved and to love others. A place to grow in Christ with people who care about us, will encourage us, support us, and pray for us. That’s what small groups offer: not another obligation, but a lifeline.
Here’s the best part: you don’t need to be a Bible expert, a seasoned leader, or even an Episcopalian to host a group. All you need is a willing heart and some space. Early in my ministry, I spent time at Saddleback Church in California (a nationally known church with more small‑group experience than anyone) and I learned their brilliant H.O.S.T. strategy.
To host a small group all you need is:
H – Have a heart for people.
A desire to welcome others and create a space where they can grow.
O – Open a space for the group to gather.
A living room or basement that has space for 6 – 10 people is perfect.
S – Serve a snack.
Just for the first night — after that, the group can rotate. Hospitality doesn’t need to be fancy. Coffee and cookies work fine.
T – Type “charris@christchurchcranbrook.org” into your email.
Tell me you’re in, and we’ll take it from there.
That’s it. Really. You choose the day. You choose the time. Many groups will meet after dinner, such as 7:00–8:30pm, but daytime groups are welcome too.
If you’ll be in town between February 22 and March 29, and this sparks your interest, I’d love to talk with you. Email me at charris@christchurchcranbrook.org
Chris, I am interested and can seat 10. Why is this only 4 weeks?
What else can I learn about the curriculum, texts, etc?
