Cranbrook Music Guild: Detroit Symphony Principal Players

March 8 @ 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Principal players from the Detroit Symphony offer a varied program of chamber music, including Mozart, Debussy, Ravel, and Baroque masters J.S. Bach and Handel. (from JR: can cut from here) The flute is indeed an ancient instrument, going back 40,000 years to bone and wood. Its airy, open sound can be soft, meditative, and commanding as well. The harp, also ancient from 4000 BCE in Mesopotamia, produces a clear and mellow sound on an instrument that has evolved to a high level of complexity. The violin developed in the sixteenth century, modern in comparison, produces a range of sound from high and piercing to warm and mellow, coupled with almost unlimited bowing and plucking techniques.
