The harp, also ancient from 4000 BCE in Mesopotamia, produces a clear and mellow sound on an instrument that has evolved to a high level of complexity. The violin developed in the sixteenth century, modern in comparison, produces a range of sound from high and piercing to warm and mellow, coupled with almost unlimited bowing and plucking techniques.
