As I wrap up my second year of EfM, I can’t help but reflect on the time spent with an amazing group of people. I must admit, when I was thinking about signing up for EfM, the commitment was intimidating. I am so glad that I decided to take the plunge and commit. The time has flown by, and I very much look forward to our weekly get-togethers full of camaraderie, spiritually insightful discussions, and ministry.
One of the things that amazed me about EfM is our reading discussions. My group consists of folks in all four years studying: the Old Testament, the New Testament, the history of Christianity, and Christian ethics. While each year is reading different materials, the discussions are structured such that we can all contribute. We share our reflections on the readings and how we experience spirituality in our lives. These discussions have been invaluable as I navigate my own journey with God.
Another wonderful aspect of EfM is the Theological Reflection [TR]. Each week, one of us selects something that recently spoke to us. It can be a bible verse, a poem, a prayer, a work of art, or any experience that we found interesting. Through the TR process developed, we discuss the theme, considering the spiritual impact it has on us. At the end of our discussion, we write a Collect as a joint impact statement that we pray together. A booklet of these Collects is published at the end of the year for us to continue to enjoy.
The TR process is an amazing exploration of our spirituality, and the banter is both profound and fun. As I listen to the sermons that our clergy give each Sunday, I imagine that this Theological Reflection
process may be the starting point for developing their message. As I see things now in my daily interactions, I think about how they reflect God’s presence.
If you are considering EfM but are afraid of wading in, take the plunge! I assure you that the environment is warm, and the experience is spiritually refreshing.
