ALAN BAHRKE
Class of 2027
General Introduction:
I was born and raised in a small farming community in Northern Michigan. I was baptized and confirmed in the Missouri and Wisconsin synods of the Lutheran church, where religion was central to our upbringing and all our families were actively involved. I graduated with honors and a BBA from Northwood University. Going into adulthood, I never felt I could be my authentic self as a gay man, so I began to only attend services and did not become very involved in the church. In September of 2019, I married Christopher and we felt increasingly uncomfortable in the Lutheran church. A member of CCC invited us to attend a service in the summer of 2021, and we went, not knowing anything about Christ Church or its staff. That June day, Bill delivered a message of inclusion for all, especially from the LGBTQ+ community. Following the service, we saw mugs with pride themed CCC Crests being sold to benefit the Ruth Ellis Center. I was also introduced to Fr. Chris Harris, and Pastor Manisha, who welcomed and affirmed us, and were informed about Bishop Bonnie as well. We knew then that we had found our church. We have attended nearly every service since then and have gone to invite countless others to worship with us!

CCC Mission:
One of the things I have loved most about Christ Church Cranbrook is its message of inclusion that transcends race, age, and sexual orientation in its congregation. When they say “all are welcome”, they genuinely mean it here, and I have felt that from the very start. I also appreciate the numerous opportunities to engage with other faith communities, such as Temple Bethel, Hartford Memorial, The Muslim Center, etc. I regularly have enjoyed the remarkable performance of the Cranbrook Project, the Detroit Opera, and the numerous artistic events that unite all in God’s sanctuary. I look forward to welcoming those who come through our doors and aiding in creating a safe, inclusive space for all members in and out of our congregation, just as was done for me.
