Friday Night Live Reimagined – Song, Story, Spirit

There’s something special about hearing someone share a story in their own voice. It’s not a rehearsed speech or a biography. It’s simply a person in a room, opening up about what they’ve lived, questioned, discovered, lost, or come to understand. This kind of storytelling asks something different from us. It asks us to really listen.
This season, Friday Night Live is adding storytelling to its series, which has always celebrated great musical talent in Metro Detroit through the Faith in Detroit initiative titled Song, Story, Spirit. Music remains at the center, but now we’re making room for another kind of voice. At each event, storytellers and musicians will come together, moving between spoken stories and live music. The goal is simple: to create a space where people connect through experiences and the art that helps us understand them.
These days, we often know a lot about each other without truly knowing one another. We see headlines, social media posts, opinions, where people live or work, and the labels they carry. It’s easy to form opinions before hearing a story.
But hearing those stories can change the way we see people. When someone shares a moment that changed them, a relationship that challenged them, a belief they struggled with, or an experience that gave them hope, the gap between “us” and “them” shrinks. We don’t have to agree on everything. That’s not the point.
Storytelling lets us see the world through someone else’s eyes, even if only for a moment. Sometimes, that’s enough to change how we see each other.
Finally, as I curate these moments, I am compelled by the idea that in a world where everyone seems to be talking, creating a space where people come together to listen may be one of the most meaningful things we can do.
