Women’s Spirituality Group celebrates summer with reading The Book of Joy

by Christine Blackwell

Summer is in full swing, and with it comes the opportunity to rejoice in warm, sunny days, relax a bit with friends and family, and catch up on some reading — especially if that reading centers on the Bible and growing our spirituality. The Women’s Spirituality Group (WSG) of CCC is fully embracing this calling during its final season of the program year. During July and August, we will engage in some enjoyable summer reading and discussion of two highly recommended books on Christian centered topics.

Both books are more fully described elsewhere in this bulletin, but note that on July 5 we begin discussing the first section of The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Carlton Abrams. As a reminder for those of you who have a particular interest in Episcopal/Anglican topics, Desmond Tutu is the former Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, as well as a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

For those of you who don’t already know about WSG, it is a friendly group of women who meet one hour each week in Rooms 201-202 for fellowship, Bible study and prayer, and fascinating and supportive discussion on a range of spiritually related topics. At a minimum, we begin each session with a group litany, follow that with brief instruction, a presentation, or the study of scripture, and then proceed to an open discussion. But sometimes we just have a party, as we did June 16. We always end each meeting with a prayer, and it is not unusual to leave with some amazing insights as well as a sense of camaraderie and Christian renewal.

As always, women of all ages, interests, backgrounds, and experiences are welcome to attend and no prior Bible study knowledge is required. On top of this, each weekly meeting is self-contained so that you can attend as often or as little as your schedule dictates.

This year we have been blessed with an amazing leadership team that deserves our heartfelt thanks for making WSG such a success. This team includes Leslie McNamara, Kristine Danielson, Susan Santoro, and Pastor Manisha. Each of these ladies either planned, facilitated, or provided instruction for WSG meetings.

After our short hiatus through the end of June, we plan to meet every Wednesday from noon to 1:00 PM. The change of meeting day from Friday to Wednesday should make it possible for more women to attend as well as facilitate better scheduling for our clergy. We hope you will join us.
